It seems to have inserted the modem and that's it - use it, as the manufacturers write, but there are subtleties (settings). Let's take a look at some of them.

Here is a standard 3G modem window from Megafon:

Go to "settings" and switch from NDIS to RAS (modem):

and disable in "Network Connections" - mobile broadband adapter.

Let me explain right away. NDIS ( Network Driver Interface Specification) - specification of the network driver interface. Designed for broadband mobile communication and is used for example: in a WiFi router. Let's say you have a laptop, smartphone, and netbook. You insert a 3G modem into the Wifi router and it is distributed to everyone a little. That's what NDIS is for.

If you are alone on a modem, then it is advisable to switch to RAS, which will significantly affect the Internet speed .

In general, I personally do not use this program. I prefer.

It also allows you to switch network modes. Traffic tracking.

Internet connection directly from the program.

There is also a program for controlling any 3G modem. ( Modem configuration on NDIS and RAS too)

From this program you can send and receive SMS, and the best part is making calls via a modem directly from your computer:

The presence of a microphone is required.

OS: Windows XP, VISTA, 7
Language: Russian, English
Modem: HUAWEI E150, E156, E160, E173, E220, E1550, E1750. Download (letitbit).

After changing the tariff to unlimited and with increased speed, I thought about buying a new Wi-Fi router. And then my old RT-N13U B1, which has been working with a modem from the Intertelecom provider for several years, is already a little tired. He began to often cut off the network, the devices refused to connect and he often had to simply reboot. To replace it, I bought an Asus RT-N18U. New, good model with two USB ports. Asus RT-N18U also supports 3G / 4G USB modems (instead of a modem, there can also be an Android phone), and can distribute wireless 3G Internet over Wi-Fi and network cable to all your devices.

We will talk in more detail about the Asus RT-N18U router itself in a separate article. And on this page, I want to show you the process of setting up an Asus router to work with a 3G modem. This manual is suitable for all Asus routers that support USB modems (WAN- USB port 3G) and have new version firmware (dark).

Asus routers that support 3G USB modem connection:

RT-AC87U, RT-AC55U, RT-N56U, RT-N14U, RT-AC51U, RT-N66U, RT-N65U, RT-AC52U, RT-AC3200, RT-N18U, DSL-N17U, RT-N10U B, RT -AC66U, RT-AC56U

These are not all models. But, in this list, the newest models for which this instruction is suitable.

All these models support USB 3G modems. Asus has a lot of such devices. There are both very expensive models and more affordable ones. In any case, if you want to distribute the Internet via a Wi-Fi network from a 3G modem, then you will easily find a suitable router for yourself.

By the way, it is very important that the router supports your modem so that they are compatible. This should definitely be checked before buying. Asus routers have a very decent list of compatible modems. The list of compatibility can be viewed on the official website, at this link: https://www.asus.com/event/networks_3G4G_support/. In the table we look for our country, we look at the provider and models of compatible modems.

I will be setting up an Asus RT-N18U with a Huawei EC 306 modem. Internet Service Provider - Intertelecom (you may have a different modem and provider)... We will configure it through the quick setup wizard, according to the following scheme:

  • Connecting 3G USB modem to Asus RT-N18U.
  • Entering the router settings.
  • Changing the admin password to enter the settings. Protecting the router control panel.
  • Setting up a 3G modem on an Asus router.
  • Setting up a Wi-Fi network and setting a password.

How to connect 3G USB modem to Asus router?

If the router is new, only from the store, then take it out of the box, connect the antennas (if any, and removable), then plug in the power adapter, and plug it into a power outlet. Connect your 3G modem to the USB port of the router:

If the router has several USB connectors, as for example on my Asus RT-N18U, then the modem can be connected to any connector. But, as a rule, one is from USB 3.0 (it is blue). I advise you to leave it for connecting flash drives or hard drives. And the modem, connect to a regular USB 2.0. By the way, on the RT-N18U the USB connector on the rear panel is located very close to the power plug. The modem is connected, but the antenna is no longer connected. The photo above shows that the antenna connector on the modem is located just opposite the power plug. I am plugging in the modem through a small extension cable. That would not occupy the USB 3.0, which is located on the front.

But, you can connect it like this:

It does not matter. The main thing is to connect the modem to the router, and turn on the power of the router. And you can proceed to setting up.

Configuring a 3G modem on an Asus router (RT-N18U)

We will configure using the quick setup wizard. In a few steps, it allows you to set all the necessary settings: change admin password (to protect settings), configure the Internet via a 3G modem, and configure Wi-Fi network (set username and password)... Very comfortably. I checked everything, everything works.

To configure, we need to go to the control panel of the router. To do this, you must first connect to our Asus router. Can be connected like a network cable (included) and via Wi-Fi network. I set up over Wi-Fi. Immediately after turning on the router, it will start broadcasting an open network with the name "Asus".

We just connect to this network (you can even set up from a tablet, or a phone), open any browser, and type the address in the address bar 192.168.1.1 ... We pass on it. If something doesn't work out, you can take a look. The quick setup wizard will open.

First, click on the button Go to.

If something went wrong for you: the settings do not open, or the setup wizard does not open, then do it. Press the RESET button for 10 seconds. Perhaps someone has already tried to configure the router. And the old settings can get in the way. Do a reset and go to settings again.

The router will immediately offer us to change the password that will be used to enter the settings. Your router settings must be protected. Therefore, come up with, and enter the password twice. Try not to forget it, or write it down somewhere. Click the button Further.

We select the operating mode of the Asus router. The mode will be immediately selected there: Wireless router... We leave him. Push Further.

So, now is the most important thing. Setting up a USB modem. Opposite point Location, select your country. Against ISP, select your internet provider from the list. All settings will be registered automatically. Don't change anything. And in paragraph USB adapter (I will introduce a modem), you can choose the model of your modem. For some reason, my Huawei EC 306 is not there. I put Auto and everything works. We expose everything, check (these are important settings) and press Further.

Well, the last settings are the name of the Wi-Fi network and setting a password for Wi-Fi. Come up with, and ask in the field Network name (SSID) some name for your wifi. And in the field Network key, you need to set a password that will be used to connect to your network. This password, I also immediately advise you to write it down somewhere. Push the button Apply.

The router will show you all the information we have asked. Push the button Ready.

The router will save all settings and reboot.

A new Wi-Fi network will appear (with the name you specified). Connect to your network using the password you set during the setup process.

Router, via 3G modem will connect to the Internet (as a rule, after rebooting, you need to wait a little, and access to the Internet will appear), and will distribute it. The entire router is already fully configured. The Wi-Fi network is also configured.

Additional USB modem settings and manual configuration of an Internet connection via 3G

If you plan to use your router only with a 3G modem (do not connect cable internet), then I would also advise you to turn off the secondary WAN, and use USB as the main one. We need to go to the settings again at 192.168.1.1 ... A login and password request will already appear. We changed this password during the setup process, enter it (the password is not from the Wi-Fi network, but to enter the settings).

Next, on the left, select the item Internet, and open the tab Dual WAN... Opposite point Enable Dual WAN set the switch to position OFF... On the contrary Primary WAN choose USB... Click on the button Apply... The router will reboot.

If you go to the settings again, then on home page, you can see information about the modem, and the Internet connection via 3G.

To change the settings of the 3G provider on the Asus router, you need to go to the tab USB application - 3G / 4G.

Here is all the information on setting up a connection via a USB modem, or a phone (Android) on Asus routers. If necessary, then configure the Wi-Fi network itself (change name, or password), you can directly on the main page with the settings. There is a "System Status" window. Well, or on a tab Wireless network.

What to do if the Asus router does not see the USB modem, or there is no Internet connection via 3G?

Very often there is a problem when you simply cannot configure the router to work with a USB 3G modem. Either the router does not see the modem at all, or it refuses to connect to the Internet. There is no connection to the provider. Wireless internet, I will introduce 3G, is not as stable as a regular cable connection. Therefore, sometimes you need to tinker with the setting.

If you configured everything according to the instructions, but there is no Internet connection, then we do this:

  • Make sure the router supports your modem. The link to the page with compatible modems, I gave at the beginning of this article.
  • We check the settings of the Internet provider. You may have chosen the wrong provider. You can try to set everything to configure (name and password) manually. I showed above how to do this. USB Application Tab - 3G / 4G.
  • You need to update your router's firmware to latest version... This can be done separately. True, you need an internet connection.
  • In such situations, the router is not always the culprit. Perhaps there is a problem with the modem, or the provider. Make sure that the Internet is paid for, and when you connect the modem to the computer, everything works.
  • Also, the problem may be that the modem cannot pick up the signal. Your operator's coverage is not available, or it is very poor. In this case, I advise you to check the operation of the modem on the computer again, or.

For a higher speed of the Internet, I advise you to install an antenna for the modem. If you have a bad signal. You can view . If your signal is really not very strong, then installing the antenna and setting it up correctly will give a very good increase in the speed of the Internet. Proven :) It's very simple to set up. We connect the modem to the computer using the AxesstelPst EvDO BSNL 1.67 program (link to instructions above) we set up the modem for maximum reception, and connect it back to the Asus router.

ask "how to make a quick start standard Windows tools without using the Modem Manager " ... Some people need this to use a modem with third-party software, others for some kind of manipulation, others simply do not want to mess with managers, wait for the modem initialization program to start and just want to have the fastest start possible. Here I will describe the way how to do this can be long, but affordable and does not require special knowledge.

It is actually easy to do this, however, you must first carry out some manipulations with your modem.

Well, now, point by point!

1. Let's create a copy of the connection settings.

We launch the program supplied with the modem and the Internet connection. Go to Start = Connections = Show all connections... In the window that opens, select in the section Remote access our active connection launched by the modem software. Right-click and select create a copy... We will have a copy of the settings. Why is it done. Firstly, so as not to suffer with creating a new profile manually and not to stumble upon a rake of some of the setting nuances, because of which the modem may not start at all or not work correctly. Secondly, after closing, many managers delete the created profile from the network connections folder, and when they start it again, they create it anew.

2. Preparing the modem.

With the manager running from the modem, launch the Device Manager, My computer =(RMB) Properties = tab Hardware = Device Manager... We reveal two points in it. Ports (COM and LPT) and Modems.

In them we see:

In chapter Ports (COM and LPT) two devices - ZTE Diagnostics Interface and ZTE NMEA Device.

In chapter Modems - ZTE Proprietary USB Modem

Note: For some modems, a third device is also possible ZTE Voice Device but this is not so important.

We see all this when the connection manager is running, attached to the modem. Now let's try to disconnect the Internet and close the program. Looking again Device Manager and a folder for network connections. And here we are in for a surprise, the modem is no longer in the listed items, with the exception of one device. That is, the standard software turned off our modem. And then we need a start without it. To do this, we need to leave it in modem mode, regardless of the work and the presence of the supplied software. This is actually what we will do. Likewise, in the network settings, the profile created by the software also disappeared, as described above.

A short digression.

It would be possible to describe disabling the autostart of the modem program, but on different versions of the software, the procedure for disabling autostart can be very different and you will have to make a long description of the procedures for each case. Therefore, we will go a simpler way, make it a little easier and more versatile.

We open in Programm Files folder with the program and from there make a copy of the folders with drivers to the desktop.

1. We refuse the proposed installation of the software and close the installer.

2. Go to My computer and find there Virtual CD-ROM modem. RMB on it Extract, thereby taking the modem out of the virtual mode CD-ROM.

3, The system will now start asking for drivers. We point her to the folder with drivers on the desktop, prepared by us earlier.

4. Everything. We distort the modem and ... Now it immediately lights up in green (or blue).
If this does not happen, then simply disconnect the modem and reconnect, then repeat the steps 1 and 2 and wait for the modem to be detected by the system. (so that you do not have to do this every time you disconnect (connect) the modem, you must disconnect the virtual CD-ROM of the modem.)

5. Go to Device Manager and check for devices:
In chapter Ports (COM and LPT) two devices - ZTE Diagnostics Interface and ZTE NMEA Device .
In chapter Modems - ZTE Proprietary USB Modem

Everything! Now our modem works by itself without additional programs.
It remains to adjust the settings for the connection profile for the modem.
We open again Network connections... On the profile we need, PKM Properties and look:

Tab General.

We put a tick (preferably) in the paragraph Display the icon in the notification area if we want to see an icon in the tray when the Internet is connected.
This is convenient and allows you to see the connection status without having to go into the network connections folder every time.

Tab Options

In chapter Dialing options remove all checkboxes except Show connection progress.
This is necessary to see whether the connection is going on when it starts or not.

In chapter Callback options put a tick Call back in case of disconnection if we want the connection to be restored automatically when the connection is broken, and specify the necessary parameters.

leave the rest of the tabs unchanged and click OK... Now create a shortcut to the desktop and close everything.

That's all. Double click on the created shortcut and the modem is connected without third-party software.

Many people already have access to 3G modems from various cellular companies MTS, Beeline, Megafon, as well as other cellular companies.

In principle, if you bought a modem from a particular company along with a SIM card and tariff plan…. This cellular company and you will only use it, then this material will not be of interest to you, since all modems of cellular companies are now installed and configured automatically for the operator for which this modem was purchased, you just need to insert the modem into the USB port and follow the instructions of the driver installer. All necessary settings will be made automatically during installation software... By the way, I must say that you will always have all the necessary software inside the modem itself (that is, the modem is a kind of disk or flash drive) and you simply cannot lose the installation disk with drivers as it was before, unless of course you lose the modem itself.

All this is true if you use the SIM card of one particular operator and his own modem.

But what if you have a modem from one operator and a SIM card from another? You may ask how and why this can happen? Well, for example, you bought a modem and a SIM card from one operator, used it and decided to change the operator because you were not satisfied with the Internet tariffs or you moved to another place of residence where there is no operator whose modem you have. There is an option to buy a new modem, but with all the availability, these modems still cannot be said that they are quite cheap. Therefore, the most profitable option is to leave the modem and change the SIM card to another operator. But there is one BIG BUT! The SIM card of another operator simply will not work in your modem! In order for the modem to detect a new SIM card, it must be re-flashed or unlocked. But more on that next time. Although, in principle, this article could be started with firmware and unlocking, but here we will talk about setting up an unlocked modem.

Because when I came across a modem, I just unblocked it, and without planning to write an article (I don’t need to flash it again), we will postpone the story about unlocking the modem for later. And now I was asked to describe the process of setting up a modem for different SIM cards. So, let's begin!

There is a USB modem MTS Huawei E1550

Where to insert the SIM card, I think it's clear?! But this modem has another nice feature. This modem can be used as a card reader for microSD flash cards. By inserting this card into the modem, you can now also work as a regular USB flash drive. Agree a useful bonus. The flash drive is inserted from the side as if under a SIM card

In principle, this is where the features of this modem end at present, just a USB modem.

So you have already installed the modem and you have a shortcut on your desktop MTS Connect.

We launch it and see that it is already configured to access the Internet with an MTS SIM card

To access the Internet, you just need to have an MTS SIM card in the modem and, of course, a balance. We press the connect button, and you will be happy. But for us now, other operator settings are important. (The SIM card of the operator you want to configure at the moment must be installed in the modem) Therefore, we need to configure them, that is, register them in the settings.

Open the tab “ options> options "

A new window opens

Select the folder " Profile Management ".

A new dialog box will open in which we press the button "New"! This is necessary to create a new connection profile for setting up a new operator!

After pressing the key "New"

We fill in the settings.

It is desirable after filling in the line “ statistics" do not fill in anything else and just after filling this line press OK.(save).

After you save these settings, the program may close completely, so we will have to open it and repeat the steps Open the tab options> options> network.

We choose

Network type

For Beeline, Megafon, MTS operators, select the item « WCDMA only ”. For operator BVK unfortunately it does not support high speed internet. We choose "OnlyGSM ".

Now we launch the second tab

It is better to leave the item here All Ranges.

There is one more point that we do not touch "Registration mode"

All settings are complete, click OK!

The modem is configured and ready for use.

Now, in the program window, select the settings of your operator and click the connect button.

At correct setting you connect to the Internet from any SIM card. Good luck

Turn on your modem and restart your computer. Subsequent Windows startup will give you a window ...

Turn on your modem and restart your computer. The next time you start Windows, you will see a window: New device detected.

Windows will try to determine for itself which modem is connected to your computer. You can specify the type of your modem yourself by selecting it from the list that will be offered to you if you check the box Do not detect modem type (select from the list)... I recommend checking this box if the list of devices is empty when pointing to an inf file.

If the modem is not detected by Windows, then you may have errors in the ports.

Follow the instructions in the modem installer.

After the modem is installed go to "Control Panel - Modems". Find the modem you just installed, select it with your mouse cursor and click properties.

From the Maximum Speed menu, select 57600 for 28.8 and 33.6 kbps modems, 115200 for 56 kbps modems, and 115200 or higher for ISDN modems (high speed serial adapters must also suggest values 230400 and 460800). If the modem does not respond at this speed, then you need to set the speed a little lower. If even now the modem does not respond, then either you have a modem without correction / compression, or you have not connected it to the network ... :))

Go to the "Establish communication" tab and in the "cancel call if there is no connection" menu, specify the time in 45 seconds. This is enough time to establish a connection.

Close the buffer settings window and go to "Advanced". Check the boxes here: Error handling, connection stage, data compression. Data transfer control - hardware. If you have a WIN-modem, then the control is software.

This completes the modem configuration.

After the system finally installs the modem and finishes setting the parameters necessary for connecting via the telephone line, you will need to make the necessary network settings.

Required network settings

Go to the "Control Panel" and click on the "Network" icon. Go to the "Configuration" tab. Then click on the "Add" button and select "Network card" from the list of components that appears.

Select Microsoft from the list and Remote Access Controller from the available components.

The installer will go to the Windows distribution disk, from which it will copy and install the necessary files.

The network card is installed. Now click on the "Add" button again and select "Protocol". In the new window, find "Microsoft" and "TCP / IP Protocol".

The installer will return to the Windows distribution disk. When installing TCP / IP, you need to set the necessary protocol parameters. In the network window that appears, place the cursor on the TCP / IP protocol and click the Properties button. In the "Wins Configuration" tab, select "Disable Wins Configuration". In the "DNS Configuration" tab, select "Disable DNS Configuration". In the Additional tab, check the box next to "Use this protocol" by default.

Configuring the network and protocols is now complete.

If you have an Adsl or USB modem, you can install it and connect to the Internet.
Next, we will figure out in order what is required to connect and how the modem is connected to the computer.

Determine what kind of modem we need

Everyone knows that the Internet contains mountains of information, that it is dangerous, there are many viruses, but when everyone is already communicating in classmates, VKontakte, they use search and the rest also want to connect to the Internet.
Buying a modem is usually just the beginning of solving the problem, since the modem needs to be installed and, as a rule, at this stage it turns out that there is no network card and needs to be bought or the modem was bought together with a new computer, but no one provides such services and needs to be bought.

A modem is a device for connecting to the Internet via a telephone line.
In the modern world, high-frequency signals are used according to different protocols, for example, 3G, 4G, ADSL2. Many people have a problem, which modem to buy and how to install it. Ask your internet service provider for advice. Find out only the supported standards.

Most used modems.
There are few pure modems now. Combined solutions with the presence of modem functions are more common.
The USB modem looks like this:

This is how the ADSL modem looks from the outside.

It has signal indicators and simple action buttons on the front. On the back there is a connection cable.

Typically, the modem is connected to a computer via a USB port or LAN port. Separately, the connection goes to the power source (outlet). A splitter is used to connect to the phone.

Two connectors are visible on the front. There is a separate third input or cable on the back of this splitter. It is needed to separate the signals of the phone and the Internet. Internet speed is no more than 8 Mbps.
When choosing a modem, be guided by its advanced functions. The more, the better. The prices for modems are quite optimal, there are different price categories. Pay special attention to the ability to keep the connection in the event of a short-term failure. You can find out from the reviews of those who worked with the modem. Take more modern modems, for example, D-Link, it holds the network more tightly than TP-Link.

We will separately consider another way - connecting via a Dial up modem.
This is the old method of using the Internet, when there were no local networks, no large providers, and the price of the Internet could terrify even wealthy state-level companies. This is the Dial-up protocol. Most often it was supplied in the form of a board. Older computers did not have a slot for such cards, they supplied an external modem that looked and connected something like the current ADSL.

Once installed, one wrong move resulted in thousands of international negotiation bills. Installing and using such a modem can come in handy in a village where there is no other internet, or when the main provider malfunctions, and visit the website is okay. The speed of such an Internet depends on the modem, approximately 56Kbps.

Installing the modem

1. USB modem.
1.1. Let's start with the fact that after opening the packaging of the modem, we disassemble it and insert the SIM card.

1.2. We connect the modem to the USB port of a computer or laptop.

1.3. We are waiting for the automatic installation of the drivers.

1.4. Install the connection manager and check the settings.

1.5. We activate the balance, and then click the "Connect" button

2. ADSL modem.
2.1. We connect the modem to a computer or laptop.
The modem is connected to the corresponding port as mentioned above: USB or LAN.
The internal modem plugs into a PCI slot like any computer board.
Dandy consoles users will surely handle the installation, because the installation processes for the cartridge and the internal modem are very similar.

2.2. Next, the cables are connected to a tape recorder or telephone socket with several outputs.
The phone itself and the cable from the modem are connected to the connectors.
A big minus of modems installed inside a computer is the possibility of computer burnout due to high voltage in the telephone network.
Perhaps these are rumors, but after several computers with such modems had breakdowns, I can no longer recommend the option with an integrated modem card, but only an external modem.

Equipment setup.
For better control, we put the drivers on the modem from the disk. Access to the modem is determined by the network settings and the settings of the modem itself. First, the computer needs to define the default address definition.

2.3. Go to "Start - Control Panel" - turn on viewing by category - in the "Network and Internet" section we find "View network status" - there "Change the adapter parameter" (left column) - find the required adapter - right click mouse and "Properties". Now we find Internet Protocol 4 (aka TCP / IP 4). Click Properties and set automatic detection.

If you do not have a disk with step by step setup, then you can go into the modem itself. This is done in the browser by entering the address 192.168.1.1.

2.4. You will get settings like this.

Tabs with parameters are visible from above and from the side. Now all that remains is to configure the ip-address, subnet mask, DNS server.
Get information about this data and other auxiliary settings from your provider.
The settings for different modems should not differ. As a last resort, read the manuals. It was in this way that modems were configured with us. It remains only to right-click on the icon in the tray and select Connect.

3. To set up Dial up we reach View the network status (see the instructions above), then at the bottom of the window, click Set up a new connection.
3.1. In the new window, select Set up a telephone connection, click next, then enter the number, username and password. This data is collected from the telephone company.
3.2. Now it remains to go to Network Connections (see the instructions for setting Changing adapter parameters), find the required adapter (this will be the connection, it will be written by phone line), right-click, Connect, OK.

In the figure, it remains to connect the cable and click Connect.

Operation and possible malfunctions

After connecting, you can safely use the Internet. If there is no Internet, then check the settings. Here, specific advice cannot be given, since how many providers, so many individual settings, there are many ways how to install a modem. As a last resort, call the master and remember everything he did. If the reason for the lack of the Internet is a line failure, then restart the modem. When using Dial up, follow all actions, control traffic, do not visit questionable sites.

Modems may have malfunctions that allow you to connect to the network and download information, and many users are surprised - the Internet light is on red all the time, and the download is in progress.
There are malfunctions on the part of the provider - when the light is red and there is no connection. You can check by asking friends or neighbors whether the Internet works for them, call the support service, connect a friend's modem.
I hope that all your problems lie in the fact that you did not know how to install the modem or you just need to wait, conclude a contract for the provision of services.

In Russia, the Internet appeared relatively recently, but even now it is safe to say that the entire population of a multinational country uses it. In order to work with this network, you will have to purchase a special device that will allow you to freely enter the global "space". At the moment, the most famous technology has become ADSL. It allows you to use the telephone line at the same time both for calls and for the Internet itself. How is this separation carried out? Due to the splitter. It is available in any modem that uses this technology. Before every user of the network at least once, but the question arose: how to choose the necessary device and not miscalculate? Providers and equipment manufacturers offer completely different modems. From the simplest to the most sophisticated, capable of creating a wireless network. The article discusses the most successful ADSL modems.

Acorp Sprinter W510N

This model has appeared on the market quite recently. She received the functions of a router, a switch. Moreover, the device is capable of working with a wireless network. Like many other ADSL modems, this one runs on a powerful embedded processor from Realtek. The device received good performance, and the manufacturer noted that this model has improved operating speed and a power saving function. The device received up to 32 MB of built-in memory. This detail is quite important, because it is due to it that it will either work under load or not. The modem can provide a maximum internet speed of up to 150 Mbps. This is a normal indicator, therefore consumers mark this device as one of the good ones.
